MIRA COSTA COLLEGE
MiraCosta College is a local community college that serves the north county coastal area of San Diego. There are two locations, one in Cardiff by the Sea and the other in Oceanside. The school was founded in 1934 and operated originally out of a wing in Oceanside High school. As the school grew it moved adjacent to the high school on a 30 acre site. It eventually even outgrew that location and in 1964 moved to a 121 acre site which it still sits at today.
The name MiraCosta is spanish for “Behold the coast” and is a nod to the campuses panoramic views of the ocean and mountains from its hilltop location. The school has just over 17,000 students and 700 academic staff. It offers associate degrees in a variety of different categories. These associate degress are equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. After earning their associate’s degree, graduate either transfer to another college to complete their 4 year degree or they transfer to starting their professional career.
The school mascot is the Spartan and the basketball and soccer teams compete in the Pacific Coast Conference. They also have a surf team and a plethora of intramural sports
In state tuition for the 16-17 year was $1152 and out of state was $5952. Educational opportunities abound and if you or a child of yours is looking for a local place to start their higher education - Mira Costa College is an affordable option. The school recently announced their Promise Program, which offers free tuition for first time college students for the first two years. The program starts for the Fall Semester of 2019 and to be eligible students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units per semester.
A $455 Million dollar upgrade to the campus was approved by voters in November of 2016. Measure MM called for upgrades to classrooms, parking, and other structures on site. The upgrades will be paid through an increase in real estate taxes and cost taxpayers $15 per $100,000 of assessed value so for a $500k home the homeowner will see an increase of roughly $75 per year to pay for the upgrades.
The oceanside campus is located just north of the 78 off College Blvd.
